The government has intensified its efforts to curb alcohol, drug and substance abuse, particularly in the Coast region, by investing in youth empowerment initiatives that promote productivity and reduce idleness.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the fight against substance abuse requires a “whole-of-society effort,” and the state is deliberately creating opportunities for young people to stay engaged.

“This fight is a whole-of-society effort,” Omollo said, adding that the government is creating avenues for youth to stay productive and away from idleness.

Omollo pointed to the Jitume Digital Hub at the Coast National Polytechnic in Mombasa County as a key example of this commitment.

“The Jitume Digital Hub is a clear demonstration of our commitment,” he said.

“The hub uses digital skills training to equip young people with the tools needed to access decent work and become self-reliant. Since its establishment, the programme has benefited about 800 students and community members.”

According to the PS, trainees attend Ajira Digital training sessions for three to five days a week, alongside Jitume and other online job initiatives.

“They also receive training in various computer packages that strengthen core ICT competencies. The programme is designed to strengthen ICT skills and open pathways to decent work,” Omollo said.

The hub’s partnership with Jumia JForce further expands opportunities for participants. Through the collaboration, trainees are trained as online marketers and sales agents, enabling them to tap into digital markets and connect with clients online.

“The facility is well-equipped, featuring 100 computers spread across two labs, one with 64 computers and the other with 36. The Ministry of ICT fully supports the hub, ensuring it has the resources needed to run effectively,” Omollo said.

“Training at the hub covers a range of skills aligned to the evolving digital economy. Learners are trained in animation, artificial intelligence, graphic design, web design, video editing and digital marketing. These skills are intended to provide a foundation for sustainable employment and entrepreneurship in the digital sector.”

As the digital programme continues to expand, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also playing a critical role.

The department is responsible for providing cybersecurity and safeguarding the digital space, ensuring a safe and trusted environment for learning, innovation and online work.

“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is ensuring a safe and trusted environment for learning, innovation and online work,” Omollo said.
