Several students were injured on Saturday morning after a school van overturned along Charity Road in Endarasha, Kieni West, Nyeri County.

Eyewitnesses said the van lost control before rolling into a ditch.

The incident left the vehicle badly damaged, with its front section smashed, the windscreen shattered, and the seats dislodged.

Some pupils were reportedly trapped inside, sustaining injuries of varying severity.

Police confirmed that no deaths have been reported, and the injured were taken to hospital.

Rescue efforts were swiftly mounted, with more than six ambulances, emergency response teams, and residents converging at the scene to assist.

The pupils were rushed to Endarasha Health Centre for urgent medical attention.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident, stating that the school van veered off the road and overturned.

Authorities said rescue and response operations were carried out promptly, though the exact number of injured pupils had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of school transport in Kenya.

Just weeks ago, a bus carrying students overturned in Kimende along the Nairobi–Naivasha highway while children were travelling back to school.

Photos shared by local media showed the bus lying on its side, with bystanders assisting the students.

Following that incident, the National Transport and Safety Authority urged motorists to exercise caution around schools, warning that reckless driving in school zones endangers children’s lives.

On December 30, NTSA also issued an advisory urging all road users to take extra precautions ahead of the busy back-to-school period, as schools were set to reopen in a few days.

The authority emphasised that private motorists, public transport operators, school administrators, and parents or guardians all share responsibility in safeguarding young commuters.

Road users were advised to strictly comply with traffic rules, plan journeys carefully, and avoid night travel due to reduced visibility.
