William Stevenson, the former husband of United States First Lady Jill Biden, has been charged with the murder of his current wife, Linda Stevenson.
The 77-year-old faces first-degree murder charges following weeks of investigation by New Castle County police in Delaware, according to the BBC.
He remains in a Wilmington detention facility after failing to post bail set at Sh65 million ($500,000).
The case stems from an incident on December 28, 2025, when police responded to a report of a domestic dispute at the Stevensons’ home.
Upon arrival, officers found Linda unresponsive in the living room.
Despite emergency responders’ efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is set to be undertaken to determine the official cause of his death.
Jill Biden and former President Joe Biden have yet to respond to the news.
Stevenson, who once played college football, was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975.
He later became a local business figure as the owner of the Stone Balloon, a college bar near the University of Delaware. After her divorce, Jill Biden met Joe Biden in 1975, and the couple married two years later.
Linda Stevenson is survived by her daughter, granddaughter, and sister, who described her as ‘deeply devoted’.
Authorities continue to investigate the case as legal proceedings move forward, leaving the community and the family grappling with the shocking turn of events.
