A recent analysis of the performance of members of the National Assembly shows that some have never made a speech since the 13th Parliament commenced on September 8, 2022.

The data, which covers up to the fourth session that ended in early December, shows that Lagdera MP Abdikadir Hussein,  Oscar Sudi (Kapsaret), George Aladwa (Makadara) are some of the legislators who have never made any speeches since they took oath of office.

The report by Mzalendo says Mvita MP Mohamed Soud Machele and his Tarbaj counterpart Hussein Abdi have each made one speech, while their Wajir West and Bomet Central colleagues, Farah Yusuf and Richard Cheruiyo, have made two.

Wajir East Mohamed Aden Abdi Daudi has also made two speeches but has sponsored two legislations namely the Law of Contract (Amendment) Bill, which is yet to be read, and the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Bill, which was passed last year.

Other low contributors are Mumias West MP Johnson Naicca (four), and Msambweni and Kasarani legislators, Feisal Abdallah and Ronald Karauri, who have made six speeches,

Among the highest contributors in the House include Deputy Majority Leader in the National Assembly and Majority Leader, Owen Mbaya and Kimani Ichung’wah.

Baya made 511 speeches last year alone and 3,611 in the 13th Parliament while Ichung’wah made 503 speeches last year and a total of 2,340 speeches in addition to sponsoring 78 Bills.

This comes against the backdrop of Speaker of the National Assembly  Moses Wetang’ula saying that about 56 per cent of the current MPs do not stand a chance of being re-elected.

Mzalendo seeks to “promote open, inclusive, and accountable Parliaments in Kenya and Africa.”
