Britney Spears sells music catalogue in landmark Sh26 billion deal

Pop icon Britney Spears has reportedly sold her entire music catalogue to independent publisher Primary Wave for an estimated Sh26 billion ($200m).

According to the BBC, the deal was finalised in late December and marks a massive financial milestone for the 44-year-old singer, whose career has spanned over two decades.

Spears joins an elite group of artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Justin Bieber, and Shakira, who have recently cashed out on their music rights.

Primary Wave, founded by Lawrence Mestel, is a powerhouse in the industry. The company manages rights for legends like Prince, Whitney Houston, and Nirvana.

The sale comes after Spears’ prolific but turbulent career.

Since her 1999 debut, she has become one of the best-selling female artists in history, moving over 150 million records and releasing global hits like …Baby One More Time, Toxic, and Gimme More.

The timing is particularly notable following Spears’ liberation from a 13-year conservatorship in 2021.

That legal arrangement had granted her father control over her finances and personal life.

While she detailed her journey in the 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, her personal life remains in the spotlight.

Her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, released his own memoir, You Thought You Knew, in late 2025.

Despite this major business move, fans may have to wait for new music.

In early 2024, Spears stated she would “never return to the music industry,” with her 2022 duet with Elton John being her most recent release.
