A police officer was killed and two others, along with a civilian, injured in an attack at Musanda Police Station in Mumias West Sub-County, Kakamega County on Friday night, police said.
The assailants escaped with two G3 rifles, each loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition. According to police, the attack occurred at around 8:50 p.m., and the attackers were armed with guns. The victims sustained bullet wounds.
One of the officers at the station said he was at Nyaleya Patrol Base within the compound when he heard commotion at the report office, followed by gunshots.
“As I stepped out to check, I heard a voice shouting, ‘There is another one,’ before another shot rang out,” he said. A bullet struck him on the left side of the head as he ran back into his house.
The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Musanda, accompanied by other officers, rushed to the scene and found Corporal Richard Utolo lying unconscious in a pool of blood inside the office with a visible wound to his chin. He had been fatally wounded by the assailants.
A colleague sustained a minor head injury, while a second officer suffered a gunshot wound to the left ear. The wife of one of the injured officers, who was present at the station during the attack, also sustained wounds to the head and right hand.
The injured officers and civilian were rushed to Bungoma West Hospital. Corporal Utolo, who was in critical condition, later died from his injuries. His body was moved to Life Care Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination, police said.
Authorities launched a manhunt for the attackers and intensified efforts to recover the stolen rifles. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the operation progresses.
