Awkward moment as minister’s unzipped trousers disrupt parliament session

South Africa’s Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is trending online after an awkward wardrobe mishap during a parliamentary session was caught on camera.

In the now-viral clip seen by TNX Africa, the senior government official stands at the dispatch box among fellow lawmakers, appearing focused on proceedings.

Dressed in a dark suit and light shirt, Godongwana maintains a composed posture, seemingly unaware that his trousers are unzipped, an oversight that soon draws attention in the chamber.

The moment begins subtly, with the Speaker calmly instructing, “Honourable Minister, if you can take your seat please.” Godongwana complies and walks back to his seat, still unaware of the situation.

Tension shifts when a Member of Parliament, dressed in military-style attire, rises and addresses the Speaker, interrupting proceedings.

“Please, Madam Speaker, my very favourite minister is on the floor,” he says, before adding, “we are seated here abused by something hanging out of his pants.”

The chamber erupts into laughter as he continues, “He has something hanging out of his pants there… I’m not sure what it is… if he can put them back inside and zip it up, thank you.”

The Speaker quickly intervenes to restore order, assuring members that the minister has heard the concern and will address it, though the amusement lingers.

Moments later, Godongwana adjusts his attire and zips up his trousers, acknowledging the situation without comment as laughter ripples through the chamber.

The clip has since spread widely online, drawing mixed reactions, from amusement to sympathy, with many noting that even top officials are not immune to unscripted public mishaps.
