Kenyans excited as foreigners turn ‘nganya’ into party bus, enjoy matatu culture

Footage of foreigners having a time of their lives inside a ‘nganya’ matatu has sparked excitement among Kenyans on social media.

In the video seen by TNX Africa, three foreign women, accompanied by Kenyans, are seen singing and dancing in a matatu they had reportedly rented.

As they were the only occupants, they freely documented the experience, drawing significant attention online.

The viral clip opens with one of the women saying, “We are about to go on the party bus. This is a public means of transportation, and they just collectively accept that this is how it is going to be.”

The scene then cuts to lively moments of dancing and twerking to loud music blasting from the matatu.

The vehicle, painted blue and decorated with palm tree graffiti, adds to the vibrant party-like atmosphere.

At one point, curious onlookers are seen trying to peek inside the bus to catch a glimpse of the activity.

On X, reactions were mixed.

Paul Carter asked, “How much is it to hire a matatu?” while Barbie Nairobi commented, “Lol. They are having a good time.”

Mark Wangunyu added, “This is a smart way of making money. Si mass public transportation pekee.”

Kenya’s matatu culture continues to draw significant interest amongst visiting foreigners.

During his January 2026 visit to Nairobi, American content creator IShowSpeed immersed himself in the city’s iconic matatu scene by boarding a “nganya”, a highly customised public service vehicle.

Riding on George Ruto’s well-known bus dubbed ‘Mood’, the streamer, born Darren Watkins Jr, appeared captivated by the pulsating music, neon lights and high-energy atmosphere, describing the experience as “crazy” and “lit.”
