Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced a dramatic and deeply personal shift in his life, revealing that he is stepping away from the alcohol business, nightlife, and his once flamboyant lifestyle in pursuit of faith, health, and self-discipline.

Taking on  X, Sonko declared that his decision was rooted in a spiritual awakening, marking what he described as a new chapter.

“Since choosing to leave alcohol and draw closer to God, I have made a firm decision to exit the alcohol business completely. I will sell or lease the Volume VIP Club, or give away all alcohol stock. This marks a new chapter in my life,” he wrote.

To reinforce his statement, Sonko shared a video of himself driving to his high-end establishment, Volume VIP Club, offering followers a raw, unfiltered glimpse into both the business he is leaving behind and the conviction driving his decision.

Speaking in Swahili during the video, he said (translated to), “Today is Wednesday, the first and I talked about putting alcohol aside. There’s a club called Club Volume that is full of alcohol, like fifty million [shillings worth]. I don’t know what to do… It’s not that I’m broke or anything I either leave it, sell it to someone, or let someone run it”

Despite declaring his exit, Sonko proceeded to the club, calling ahead to his security team to grant him access. “Fungua club, washa AC, washa ngoma nataka kupitia niangalie kaa kila kitu iko sawa ambia DJ nimesema ivo,” he instructed, maintaining the authoritative tone that once defined his public persona.

Inside, the club reflected the opulence and luxury long associated with Sonko’s brand.

The establishment appeared elegant and spacious, with meticulously arranged bar areas showcasing a wide range of alcohol brands, including premium wines.

As he toured the venue, Sonko paid attention to the hygiene standards and overall condition of the space, suggesting that while he is ready to let go, he remains keen on preserving its value for a potential buyer or operator.

Beyond his business decisions, he opened up about a broader lifestyle overhaul that has seen him abandon habits that once defined him.

“I am no longer clubbing, and I am not interested in girls anymore. Right now, I am focusing on my health and life,” he said candidly.

The former governor, once synonymous with flashy displays, fast living, and the nightlife scene, now says his priorities have shifted entirely. He revealed that he has adopted a strict wellness routine, cutting out common staples such as chapati, rice, ugali, and fried foods in a bid to improve his overall health.

In a public demonstration of his commitment, Sonko underwent a series of medical tests in the presence of two healthcare practitioners.

The tests, which included checks for blood pressure, glucose levels, and HIV, all returned negative results.

“What I want to tell you is that health is very important. Kupima pressure ni bure, glucose (diabetes)… hii kitambi imekatika,” he said, pointing to his noticeable weight loss as evidence of his lifestyle changes. “You won’t see me in clubs these days because I am working on my health.”

He also took the opportunity to warn Kenyans about the dangers of poor dietary habits.
