Today, April 4, 2026, all eyes shift to the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, where Mbavu Destroyer and Majembe finally step into the ring for what has become Kenya’s most talked-about grassroots boxing event “Vurugu Fight Night.”
What started as a social media sensation has evolved into a nationwide spectacle, drawing fans, politicians, business leaders, and corporate sponsors.
At its core, the fight is about two ordinary men whose stories have captured the imagination of a nation.
Mbavu, famously branded “Weka Mawe,” rose to viral fame with his raw energy and unfiltered street charisma, while Majembe, calm and composed, brings a calculated hunger for victory.
The fight was initially framed by Oga Obina, the event’s mastermind, who first announced KSh 1 million as the prize money.
“I wanted something that brings ordinary people into the spotlight,” Obina said.
What seemed like a modest sum quickly became the spark for an unprecedented wave of support.
Political involvement soon amplified the stakes. President William Ruto, through Lang’ata MP Jalang’o, pledged and delivered Sh4 million, splitting Sh1 million for each fighter, while sponsoring 2,000 tickets for fans.
“These two young men have captured the imagination of the country. Let them show their skills,” the President commented ahead of the fight.
Business and community leaders also joined, adding both cash and symbolic support. Ronald Kariauri, the MP for Kasarani pledged and delivered Sh2 million.
Entrepreneur Oketch Salah added Sh 200,000, while Oburu Odinga contributed Sh1 million.
Beyond cash, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi purchased 400 tickets worth Sh 400,000, ensuring that fans could witness the historic bout in person.
The stakes extended further when George Ruto reportedly added Sh 500,000.
Meanwhile, Pastor Victor Kanyari pledged Sh 50,000 specifically to Mbavu Destroyer if he wins.
Beyond money, lifestyle prizes elevated the fight to life-changing territory.
CEO Gatimu promised Mbavu a superbike if he claims victory, while OdiBets pledged a brand-new car for the winner, transforming the bout into a tangible life upgrade while Tecno added a Tecno Camon 50 smartphone.
All together the total value comfortably exceeds Sh6 million.
Amid the glitz and cash, the fighters remain grounded in their personal stakes. Mbavu told reporters, “Obinna has changed my life. This fight isn’t just about money; it’s about showing that someone like me can rise from nothing.”
Majembe, too, expressed his focus and determination, saying, “Leo ndio ile siku, mniombe nishinde game… kwanza leo itakuwa kifo ama uhai.”
