They include Athi River South Sub county police commander Senior Superintend of Police David Kandie and Base Commander Chief Inspector Japheth Makembo.
The duo were among the officers who were attending to an accident scene along the highway when they sustained the injuries on Wednesday night.
A motorist whose motor-vehicle led to the injuries was arrested and detained at the Athi River police station awaiting to be arraigned at Mavoko Law Courts hours after he sped off, abandoned the motor vehicle and escaped.
Police said the incident happened near Green Park area at the Mto Mawe bridge in Athi River, Machakos county. It was reported to Athi River police station as a serious injury road traffic accident involving senior police officers. It involved three motor vehicles.
“The accident occurred on 8th Day of April 2026 at around 2300 hrs at Green Park area in Mto Mawe bridge along the Nairobi – Mombasa highway involving an Isuzu FVZ trailer which was being driven by Kenneth Muchiri Miriti, a GK Nissan X-Trail which was stationery parked at the road side by its driver Police Constable Julius Mwaga and a Isuzu NQR driven by Joseph Kavanja,” a police report seen by the Star read in part.
The officers are said to have been controlling traffic at a scene of accident that was earlier reported when a speeding motor vehicle which was being driven towards Nairobi direction rammed into the rear of the Isuzu NQR that was moving towards the same direction and pushed it to the GK Nissan X-Trail which was parked on the right side of the road.
As a result, Kandie sustained a fracture on the right lower leg, while Makembo sustained soft tissue injury on the right hand and wrist.
Corporal Paul Kasine of NCTPU sustained soft tissue injury on the left leg. All the officers were treated at a private hospital in Mlolongo town and discharged in stable condition.
Following the accident, the motor vehicle that rammed into the other leading to the accident and injuries reportedly sped off after the incident and was abandoned at Devki area approximately three kilometers from the scene of the accident.
Its driver was later arrested after he fled the scene. He has since been held at the same police station.
The scene was visited and necessary police action taken.
The motor vehicles were escorted to Athi River police station where they have since been impounded awaiting inspection. Cause code 7 to be used.
Police have launched investigations into the accident.
The road where the accident occurred is tarmacked and clearly marked.
