VIDEO: Questions after man chants ‘Wantam’ while atop police vehicle in daring stunt

A dramatic scene unfolded on a busy street after a bold Gen Z youth climbed onto a moving police truck, turning an ordinary day into a spectacle that quickly drew attention from onlookers.

Reports online indicated that the young man, appearing fearless and energised, jumped onto the passenger side of the police vehicle as it slowed in traffic.

Clinging to the door before hoisting himself up, he began loudly chanting “wantam,” an anti-government slang expression that has recently gained traction among young people to signal defiance, unity, or a call for change.

The man was heard shouting one term as others in the background responded, “utumishi kwa wote”.

Crowds gathered almost instantly, some cheering him on while others recorded the incident on their phones.

The atmosphere quickly shifted into a mix of excitement and tension, as the unusual act blurred the line between protest, performance and risky behaviour.

Despite the potential danger, the youth appeared unfazed, waving and shouting as the vehicle continued moving. His actions drew mixed reactions, with some praising his courage while others questioned the safety and legality of the stunt.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the incident, but such acts often raise concerns about public safety and respect for law enforcement.

The incident brings to the fore a growing trend among Gen Z, where bold, attention-grabbing actions, often amplified by social media, are used to express identity, frustration or humour.

Whether seen as rebellion or recklessness, the moment has already captured public imagination, with clips circulating widely online.

Gen Z in Kenya have maintained momentum since the June 2024 protests, evolving from a spontaneous uprising into a sustained push for accountability through 2025 and 2026.

While the 2024 protests initially focused on rejecting the Finance Bill, the movement has since broadened in scope and expression.
