Leaders in Kisumu have issued a strong warning against rising insecurity, declaring they will not allow a few individuals to tarnish the city’s reputation as a key investment and economic hub.

Speaking after a high-level security consultative meeting, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the county leadership had resolved to take firm action following recent incidents of lawlessness.

“As you can see, we have been holding consultations this morning with leaders from Kisumu county, including members of parliament, the county commissioner and members of the county executive. We have discussed the situation and agreed on the way forward,” Nyong’o said.

In a joint statement read by the governor, leaders said the recent insecurity incidents were isolated and not a true reflection of Kisumu’s character as a premier investment destination and gateway to the Lake Region.

However, they acknowledged that the incidents, including attacks on businesses such as Fairways Hotel and Java House at West End Mall, risk undermining investor confidence and economic progress.

“We strongly condemn these acts of hooliganism. They are criminal and a direct assault on the livelihoods of our people,” the statement read.

The leaders called on the national government, through the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, to intensify intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal gangs allegedly masquerading as political supporters.

They also demanded swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible, regardless of their status.

“We will not allow a few individuals to tarnish Kisumu’s image as a safe and welcoming city,” Nyong’o said, adding that the county government would work closely with security agencies to restore order.

Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron said leaders had agreed to act collectively to address the situation before it escalates.

“Kisumu has always been a regional hub serving nearly 15 surrounding counties and the wider East African region. The trends we are seeing are worrying, but we have resolved that this must be nipped in the bud,” Oron said.

He said solutions to the insecurity challenge lie in collaboration between the county government, national government and security agencies.

County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo assured residents that security agencies would not tolerate criminal activities, including extortion and harassment of the public.

“There will be no compromise when it comes to security. We will deal firmly with criminal gangs to ensure Kisumu remains a destination of choice for tourism, conferences and investment,” he said.

Leparmorijo also urged residents to cooperate with authorities by providing accurate information to help curb crime.

The leaders further appealed to young people to resist being used to fuel violence and instead take advantage of economic opportunities within the county.

They reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding peace and stability, insisting that Kisumu’s progress will not be derailed by insecurity.
