Jada Pinkett Smith explains why she went public with ‘entanglement’

Jada Pinkett Smith has addressed the long-running controversy surrounding her past relationship outside her marriage to Will Smith, explaining why she chose to speak about it publicly.

She said the decision was deliberate, aimed at protecting her family and maintaining honesty, even at the cost of intense public scrutiny.

“I could have taken it to the grave, but I didn’t want secrets in our family,” she said. “Sometimes you have to put your own happiness aside to protect the people you love.”

Jada has maintained that the relationship happened during a period of separation. She later revealed that she and Smith had been living independent lives since 2016, despite continuing to appear together publicly.

The couple now describe their bond as a “life partnership,” centred on personal growth and mutual support rather than a conventional marriage.

Their relationship has long defied tradition. The two met in the mid-1990s when Jada auditioned for a role on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Though she did not get the part, it marked the start of a connection that later became a romance. They married in 1997 and built a family, raising Jaden and Willow while managing high-profile careers.

Both have been open about the complexities of their union. Jada has said she was initially hesitant about marriage and felt pressured at the time, but remained committed to making it work. Over time, their relationship evolved into one defined more by openness and personal freedom than convention.

By 2016, they reached a turning point, choosing to separate privately after years of trying to meet expectations that left them emotionally drained. It was during this period that Pinkett Smith entered the relationship she later described as an “entanglement.”

Despite living what they called “completely separate lives” for years, the two never legally divorced.

Over time, they have continued to redefine their bond, emphasising that their connection is less about labels and more about partnership.
