Matonya inches closer to freedom after Sh500,000 bond secured

The legal pressure facing Bongo Flava icon Matonya has begun to ease as efforts to secure his release reach a critical stage.

After several days in police custody over serious sexual assault allegations, the Vaileti singer is now edging closer to release, backed by a strong show of support from the East African music community.

A key development emerged outside the Mombasa Law Courts, where rapper Kaa La Moto confirmed that the financial requirements for Matonya’s release have been met.

To satisfy the court-set bond of Sh500,000 (about Tsh10 million), an associate identified as Boss Rama has offered his vehicle as collateral.

Supporters say the car’s value exceeds the required amount, a move aimed at meeting the court’s security conditions and speeding up the singer’s release from remand.

The case, however, remains highly sensitive. The prosecution is pursuing a rape charge, while Matonya’s associates, including promoter Kendy and Kubwa Studios, have maintained a visible presence at the courthouse.

Kendy has strongly defended the artist, alleging he has been “framed” and that the case is intended to damage his long-standing career.

Despite the progress, Matonya’s release remains subject to strict court conditions. He has denied the charges, and the court has ordered him to surrender his passport and barred him from leaving Kenya without approval.

As officials complete the valuation of the pledged vehicle, uncertainty still hangs over the case.
