VIDEO: Woman confronts relatives during funeral over neglect during mother’s illness

A video of a young woman confronting her relatives during her mother’s funeral has gone viral.

In the clip seen by TNX Africa, the Gen Z, dressed in a black puff jacket, trousers and sneakers, asserts that none of the family members helped them when her mother was admitted to hospital.

She added that no one visited or checked on her well-being.

“Akaenda hospitali, hakuna mtu mmoja alienda kushughulika. Ajue ako aje? Anaendelea aje? Ako mzima, afya yake iko aje? Hakuna ata mtu mmoja alienda kumwona,” she said.

Drawing an uproar from the seated crowd, the young woman stood her ground, saying, “No I will talk. Hamtakangi kuambiwa ukweli.”

Amid continued murmurs, she stated that none of the relatives supported them financially. Asking if anyone contributed towards the hospital bills, she mentioned a few who did.

Another Gen Z admonished the mourners during her mother’s burial: “All of you are hypocrites. You abandoned and neglected her when she was unwell, but after her death, you’re rushing to assist in her burial. If she had received this kind of support when she was unwell, she could… pic.twitter.com/Sil87zUPtU

“Alikuwa hosi, ni wangapi walishughulika juu ya matibabu yake? Sa izo wenye tunangangana ni mimi, Caro, Milly na Pamela. Tunashughulika vile atatibiwa, afadhali kungekosa financial support lakini mwende kumwona a feel vizuri,” she said.

As the speech sparked mixed reactions, the emcee approached and spoke to her inaudibly, signalling her to sit. However, some mourners could be heard urging her to continue.

“Fay ongea,” a woman shouted.

The young woman went on to accuse family members of pretending to care while failing to show up when it mattered.

“Mnasugarcoat ati mnapendana lakini mtu akiwa kwa shida na ni ndugu yenu hamshughuliki. Mtu akikufa mnamfanyia matanga vizuri. Mngemshughulikia at least angepona,” she said.

After finishing her remarks, she handed back the microphone as the crowd broke into debate. Kenyans on social media also shared varied reactions.

On X, Mike wrote, “Sadly it’s the reality of life, especially here in Africa, when alive, few will offer help or compliment you or even support your hustle, but when you die, we are quick to changa and give all the praise of how good you were blah blah… she is learning but good that she spoke it out.”

Another user, Eric Mwangi, added, “Unfortunately it’s the truth, most people cannot lend financial assistance when one is alive but would be the first ones to contribute 100k in that WhatsApp group highlighted in bold letters Francis and family 100k, for expediency of course.”
