The driver and cameraman attached to Public Service and Human Capital Development Principal Secretary Jane Imbunya have recorded statements in connection with a vandalism incident targeting her official car, which was parked outside a lodging in Kisumu.
Also interrogated is the security guard at Kingdom Guest House at Kamasi area along the busy Kisumu-Busia Road. Three thieves on Tuesday night broke into the Isuzu D-Max registration GKC 073A, stealing a camera worth about Sh400,000.
The incident was discovered the following morning when the driver and bodyguard, identified as Senior Sergeant Titus Etyang, went to pick the vehicle. The duo noticed that the rear right passenger window had been broken and the camera, which was left on the back seat, was missing.
A review of a nearby CCTV footage shows three men arriving at around 8:26pm. They briefly survey the area as they closely peep through the rear widow. Two of them can be seen walking away while checking if someone could be approaching before returning to the car where one of them picks an object from the ground and strikes the window.
The man again stealthily walks away before returning and finally breaking the window. The gang then grabs the camera and flees from the scene in a break-in that lasted about two minutes.
Kisumu Central Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Joseph Wambua said the driver and cameraman had recorded statements as persons of interest.
“We’re not treating the driver and cameraman as suspects; they are the custodians of the property that was parked at a place that is not well secured,” said Wambua.
According to regulations, GK vehicles on transit are supposed to be parked at authorised and secure locations at the end of the working day. And police stations or posts are the preferred locations for parking GK vehicles on transit.
Early in the day, Dr Imbunya had been dropped at her Vihiga home when her team decided to spend the night in Kisumu since accommodation space in Mbale, Chavakali and Majengo towns was not available due to Labour Day celebrations in the County.
“It is an unfortunate incident, but police have assured me that they are investigating the matter, and hopefully they will arrest the culprits and recover the camera,” said the PS who was involved in the preparations of the national event held in Chavakali on Friday.
