Blue Ivy steals spotlight in rare Met Gala appearance despite age ban

Blue Ivy Carter commanded the spotlight at the 2026 Met Gala, sparking intense debate after appearing to bypass the event’s strictly enforced age requirements.

Beyoncé, serving as a co-chair for the evening, arrived as one of the final celebrities to grace the red carpet, draped in a skeletal-themed gown and an expansive feathered cape. She was joined by husband Jay-Z and their 14-year-old daughter.

Blue Ivy’s appearance became an immediate talking point because the Met Gala typically prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from attending.

Anna Wintour has previously defended this policy, describing the high-profile fundraiser as an environment that is not appropriate for minors.

While the rule has been firm in recent years, exceptions were more common in the past. Elle Fanning and Hailee Steinfeld both attended as young teenagers, and Jaden and Willow Smith were notable guests in 2016.

For her debut, Blue Ivy wore a sophisticated white bubble-skirt gown paired with a structured, oversized collar jacket. She accessorised the look with black sunglasses and a pearl necklace, maintaining a poised demeanour throughout the evening.

Fashion was not the only thing under scrutiny, as fans dissected a subtle hand gesture by Beyoncé on the carpet.

Many observers interpreted a “rock on” sign as a potential teaser for her upcoming album, rumoured to be the third act in the trilogy that began with Renaissance and Cowboy Carter.

Social media was quickly flooded with theories that the skeletal aesthetic and the hand signal confirmed a shift into the rock genre.

“This skeleton look must be confirming that Act III is rock music,” one fan wrote on social media. Another enthusiast noted, “Beyoncé made the rock sign, Act III is coming.”

While the music icon remained silent regarding her next creative chapter, the family’s presence dominated the cultural conversation.

Blue Ivy’s inclusion on the guest list ultimately ensured the 2026 gala would be remembered as a night where tradition took a backseat to a significant family milestone.

The Carters ultimately signalled a new era for the prestigious event.
