Embattled Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed today had questions to answer, appearing before the National Assembly Departmental Committee for Sports, Culture and Tourism.

The President, recently suspended by his own National Executive Council (NEC) over alleged financial impropriety and procurement breaches, including an insurance scandal worth Sh42 million involving the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), remained adamant that he still leads the federation.

Mohammed is in hot soup following an explosive expose by The Standard, where bank documents, a damning letter from the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), and a procurement trail point to a transaction under his name, in which brokerage fees worth $328,735 were wired to a company with no licence to operate.

Nine out of 14 FKF NEC members last month passed a formal resolution calling for top federation officials to step aside, directing Mohammed, NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim and Acting General Secretary Dennis Gicheru to vacate office temporarily to make way for investigations.

The NEC then recommended that his deputy, McDonald Mariga, take over in an acting capacity pending the conclusion of investigations.

We discussed pertinent key issues regarding Kenyan football, including AFCON 2027 preparations, and addressed all concerns raised by the committee.

The Sports Tribunal, however, overturned the NEC’s resolution to suspend the officials, with a temporary order following a case filed under a certificate of urgency, seeking to quash the decision by the FKF NEC.

With the matter already of public interest and causing jitters in the football fraternity, Mohammed insisted he still remains the FKF President.

“I have not stepped aside. I remain the duly elected FKF President and represented the country in the recent FIFA Congress in Vancouver” said Mohammed.

He denied any loss of funds after the FKF NEC announced his suspension, claiming a smear campaign aimed at damaging his reputation while also destabilising the federation was active.

“The purported resolution of 24th April 2026 lacks constitutional validity and are in my view, null and void,” he added.

World football governing body FIFA already, through a statement directed FKF to submit documents to support its review, including records of how the emergency NEC meeting was convened, proof of quorum, voting details, and evidence that the affected officials were given a fair opportunity to respond before any action was taken, as outlined in Articles 38, 40 and 41 of the FKF Constitution.

“We wish to inform you that FIFA, in coordination with the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), is currently assessing this matter with a view to gaining a clear and accurate understanding of the circumstances surrounding the adoption of the resolution, as well as its compliance with the FKF statutes,” the letter, sent by email to FKF, states.

The Mariga-led faction, confirmed it had submitted all requested documentation to FIFA, with the former footballer also appearing before the committee the same day.

The NEC said it had explained its submission, addressing all issues raised by FIFA and supported by relevant documents, records, and evidence to ensure a transparent review.
