While it is typically the most glamorous night in fashion, the 2026 Met Gala was met with intense public backlash this year.
The controversy centred on the appointment of billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, as honorary chairs.
The Amazon founder’s prominent role triggered boycott calls and widespread debate about the event’s direction.
Known as “fashion’s biggest night out,” the annual Vogue fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art brings together top celebrities and industry figures.
Despite its charitable purpose, criticism centred on Bezos’ perceived ties to the Trump administration and longstanding concerns about Amazon’s labour practices.
Reports indicate the couple contributed Sh1.2 billion ($10 million) to support the event, a move that further fuelled protests.
According to Rolling Stone, an activist group dubbed “Everyone Hates Elon” spearheaded a boycott campaign, plastering New York City with posters opposing Bezos’ involvement.
Protesters were also seen carrying placards with messages accusing Amazon of worker exploitation and controversial business links.
In parallel demonstrations, Amazon employees staged a makeshift runway dubbed “Ball Without Billionaires,” showcasing simple outfits in protest.
Another activist group reportedly hid small bottles filled with fake urine around the museum to highlight allegations that some Amazon workers are denied adequate bathroom breaks.
Activists also targeted the museum’s gift shop by planting parody souvenirs, including “The Bezos Met Gala” plates bearing critical slogans about the billionaire and his business ties.
Public figures weighed in on the controversy.
Comedian Meredith Lynch criticised celebrities planning to attend, particularly those wearing symbolic protest pins, arguing the event’s sponsorship undermined their message.
Actress Taraji P. Henson echoed the sentiment, expressing disbelief at attendees’ participation.
The backlash cast a shadow over the high-profile event, with critics questioning the decision to elevate Bezos and Sánchez Bezos to honorary roles.
Social media reactions remained divided, with some praising outspoken critics while others pointed to continued consumer reliance on Amazon.
