Tom Mboya, popularly known as Ngozi Nyeusi, is leaning into feel-good music with his latest release Weekend Vibe, even as he gears up for a new extended play project.

The songwriter, singer and rapper says the track reflects both his journey and his current creative direction.

His path into music dates back to the late 2000s when he was part of a group called Kenyanna.

His passion, however, began much earlier in church. “I fell in love with music from the church choir,” he says, noting that those early experiences helped shape his voice and confidence as a performer.

A defining moment came in 2007, when he and his group were invited to perform in the Netherlands.

“That’s when I realised music was more than just a passion,” he says. “We were representing Kenya at a summer festival, and it opened my eyes to what was possible.”

Over the years, he has developed a sound he describes as hip hop fused with “urban good vibes”.

His influences cut across genres and generations. “I was influenced by Run-DMC and The Isley Brothers, but also Fela Kuti and Les Wanyika played a big part in my lyrical journey,” he explains.

Like many independent artistes, his journey has come with its challenges. He points to the cost of production as a major hurdle.

“Getting quality music production has been the biggest challenge because it comes with high costs,” he says.

His new single Weekend Vibe, featuring Keydolly, captures a lighter, more carefree side of his artistry.

The song was inspired by a simple moment. “It’s just a chill song I wrote when I was hanging out with my boys one weekend, sipping and dancing,” he says.

The collaboration with Keydolly, a friend based in the United Arab Emirates, came naturally. “She’s fun-loving and has angelic vocals, so I sent her the track and she added her melodies and harmonies.”

The result is a laid-back track designed for relaxation and enjoyment. “It’s feel-good music meant for unwinding after a long week,” he explains.

He describes the song as a continuation of his sound rather than a shift in direction. “It’s still me, just a more mellow and relaxed tune to get you in a party or enjoying mood,” he says. However, the recording process came with its own challenges. “It was not easy getting our voices to match perfectly, especially working from different places, but we made it work.”

Ngozi is now focused on his upcoming EP under Bossman Inc.

“I’m currently working on an EP with some of the best producers within and outside Africa,” he says as he hints at more collaborations, including a new track with Ogopa Deejays expected to drop soon.
