The SportPesa Premier League (SPL) title race and relegation fight are expected to take centre stage again this weekend as round 31 matches kick off with pressure growing at both ends of the table.

Today’s fixtures could shape the title race further, especially for AFC Leopards, who remain the closest challengers to leaders Gor Mahia. Ingwe host Mara Sugar at Nyayo Stadium, knowing they cannot afford to drop points if they are to keep their fading title hopes alive.

Leopards sit second with 55 points from 29 matches, nine behind Gor Mahia, who have already played one game more. Victory for Ingwe would reduce the gap to six points and pile pressure on Gor ahead of tomorrow’s difficult clash against defending champions Kenya Police.

However, Mara Sugar is also chasing a strong finish to the season. The millers sit ninth with 40 points and are still within reach of the top five positions. Their ability to frustrate bigger teams this season means Leopards will have to stay sharp.

Elsewhere, Shabana welcome Ulinzi Stars in an early kick-off match at Gusii Stadium.

Shabana is enjoying a strong campaign and sits sixth with 47 points, only eight behind Leopards despite having played one game less.

A win could move them level with fourth-placed Nairobi United and keep alive slim hopes of finishing in the top three.

For Ulinzi Stars, the match carries a different meaning. The soldiers are 15th on the table with 31 points and remain dangerously close to the relegation zone. Another defeat could drag them deeper into trouble with only a few matches left in the season.

Tomorrow’s fixtures carry even more weight in both the title and survival races.

At Nyayo Stadium, leaders Gor Mahia face third-placed Kenya Police in the biggest match of the weekend.

Gor have looked unstoppable for much of the season, collecting 64 points from 30 matches while scoring 46 goals, the highest in the league. Another victory would move them closer to another league crown.

Police, however, are quietly enjoying one of their best campaigns in recent weeks. They sit third with 51 points. Their solid defence, which has conceded only 18 goals all season, will face a serious test against Gor’s attack.

Meanwhile, the relegation battle could take another dramatic turn. Mathare United host APS Bomet in a key survival clash at Kasarani Annex. Mathare are 12th with 35 points, while APS Bomet sit just one point behind in 13th. A win for either side would provide breathing space heading into the final rounds.

Kariobangi Sharks are also under pressure as they host Nairobi United. Sharks sit only six points above the relegation places and cannot relax yet, while Nairobi United are chasing a top-three finish after an impressive season.

At Wang’uru Stadium, Tusker face struggling Bidco United. Bidco are second from bottom with 24 points and desperately need victories to avoid joining already relegated Sofapaka in the drop zone.

Murang’a Seal hosts Kakamega Homeboyz while KCB takes on Bandari in matches that could influence the race for top-half positions.

Round 31 will finally end on Monday when Posta Rangers meet Sofapaka at Kasarani Annex. While Sofapaka’s relegation has already been confirmed after a poor season that has produced only three wins in 30 matches, Posta Rangers still need points to avoid slipping closer to danger.
