Airbus Helicopters has confirmed the delivery of its 1,000th H130 helicopter to Kenyan operator Rotor Jet Aviation, a bird estimated to be worth approximately Sh500 million.

The arrival comes just months before the 2027 General Election, sparking immediate speculation online.

Many Kenyans have linked the purchase to the upcoming political campaign season, as politicians often use helicopters discreetly imported under various aviation firms.

Despite the rumours, Airbus maintained that the aircraft officially belongs to Rotor Jet Aviation.

“We just delivered the 1,000th H130 helicopter to Kenyan operator Rotorjet Aviation. From passenger transport to aerial work, the H130 continues to define excellence in the intermediate single-engine market. Thank you to our customers worldwide for their continued trust,” Airbus announced in a social media post.

Based at Wilson Airport, Rotor Jet Aviation specializes in executive charters, helicopter safaris, and medical evacuations across East Africa.

The company describes itself as a provider of luxury and efficiency, offering international top-tier maintenance services.

“Whether you seek an unforgettable helicopter charter experience, an unparalleled journey with our high-quality private jet charter services, where luxury and efficiency converge at 40,000 feet, or international top-tier maintenance services, we’re here to elevate your expectations,” the company’s LinkedIn profile states.

The company already operates a fleet of H130 helicopters, including units registered as 5Y-KDN and 5Y-DSC.

The former has been frequently used to ferry high-ranking government officials across the country.

Earlier this year, the chopper was seen landing at Kositei Primary School ahead of the funeral service of Bill Lorupe Ballot Kassait, son of Tiaty MP William Kamket and Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait.

In 2025, the same helicopter was photographed taking off from Belgut TTI in Kericho, carrying CS William Kabogo, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Dennis Itumbi, among other dignitaries.

In 2024, it landed in Siaya carrying the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Governor James Orengo.

While Rotor Jet Aviation has not officially commented on the new acquisition, the timing continues to fuel public discussion.

The Airbus H130 is a light utility helicopter favoured by VIP operators for its spacious, quiet cabin and safety features.

It is powered by a Safran Arriel 2D engine, reaching a maximum speed of 287 km/h and a range of nearly 600 kilometres.

The aircraft is designed with a signature Fenestron shrouded tail rotor, which significantly reduces noise levels.

This makes it ideal for urban operations and tourism. It can accommodate one pilot and seven passengers, or be configured for medical crews and stretchers.

“The H130 incorporates state-of-the-art technologies, materials, systems and avionics, building on the proven experience of Airbus’ Ecureuil rotorcraft family,” the manufacturer notes on its official site.

Airbus also highlights its extensive global support network, which includes over 100 distributors and maintenance centers to ensure operational readiness.

“This network includes 30 customer centres and affiliate sites; more than 100 distributors, representatives, training centres, repair and overhaul facilities and maintenance centres, as well as 10 logistics hubs in France, Germany, the United States, Hong Kong and elsewhere,” Airbus states.

While official pricing is typically provided upon request, industry listing sites like Helitrader value a 2025 model at roughly Sh516 million ($4 million).

After shipping and taxes, the helicopter remains a luxury accessible only to Kenya’s wealthiest elite.
