As the spotlight shone on the Miss Universe Kenya 2026 stage, one outfit stood out for celebrating Kenya’s rich cultural identity freshly and authentically.
Designed by Scovia Miruka, the African-inspired ensemble moved away from the commonly used kitenge fabrics, instead embracing intricate beadwork that reflected the country’s diverse heritage.
Speaking to TNX Africa, Miruka said the inspiration behind the design was to create a look that was unmistakably Kenyan while honouring the traditions shared by communities across the country.
“We wanted to showcase something very Kenyan and very authentic and move away from kitenge and the obvious fabrics that people use. So we decided to use beads that have always been used by Africans and Kenyans from different communities to showcase Kenyan fashion,” she said.
The designer said the outfit was created not just as a fashion statement, but as a symbol of national pride as Kenya’s representative prepares to take the global stage.
By using beadwork, Miruka highlighted one of Africa’s oldest artistic traditions while giving it a contemporary twist suited for an international beauty pageant.
The ensemble blends elegance with cultural artistry. Crafted in soft neutral tones, it features a structured strapless bodice that accentuates the waist before flowing into dramatic layered ruffles, creating volume and graceful movement.
The look is completed with bold beaded shoulder adornments and a matching beaded choker, drawing inspiration from traditional Kenyan and African beadwork while giving the outfit a high-fashion edge.
“It means a lot to me that the piece represents Kenya as our contestant competes on the global stage,” she added.
Beyond its striking appearance, the creation also reflects the collaborative spirit behind Miruka’s brand. She revealed that the project brought together skilled artisans and creatives, reinforcing her belief that great fashion is built through collective effort.
“This has shown the power of community because my brand is built on community,” she said.
Her design has drawn praise for blending culture, craftsmanship and modern elegance, proving that Kenyan fashion can tell powerful stories without relying on conventional prints.
As Kenya prepares for the Miss Universe competition, Miruka hopes the outfit will inspire greater appreciation for locally made designs and the artisans keeping traditional craftsmanship alive.
