After a difficult period for superhero films, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reminded Hollywood that the web-slinger remains one of cinema’s biggest crowd pullers.
The latest Marvel and Sony film opened to an estimated Sh45.8 billion ($355 million) in North America, making it the second biggest domestic opening weekend in history, behind only Avengers: Endgame. It added another Sh73.8 billion ($572 million) from international markets for a worldwide debut of Sh119.6 billion ($927 million).
The record-breaking performance comes after a string of disappointing superhero releases. All three Marvel films released in 2025 fell short of expectations, while DC’s Superman reboot and Supergirl also failed to match the box-office heights of earlier franchise entries.
The turnaround has positioned Brand New Day as the film that has reignited audience enthusiasm for superhero movies.
Released last week, the film is Tom Holland’s fourth standalone outing as Peter Parker.
It continues the story from Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter sacrificed his personal relationships by erasing the world’s memory of his identity to save the multiverse.
In Brand New Day, Peter is left living a lonely existence, spending his days protecting New York while struggling to move on from losing MJ, played by Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, portrayed by Jacob Batalon, who no longer remember him.
The emotional burden becomes central to the story as Peter wrestles with grief while facing a dangerous new villain capable of jumping from body to body.
Along the way, he seeks guidance from Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo, while Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher. Sadie Sink also joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a key role.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton takes the franchise in a darker direction, placing greater emphasis on Peter Parker’s emotional struggles while scaling back the trademark humour associated with many Marvel films.
Spider-Man has remained one of Marvel’s most enduring characters because he combines extraordinary powers with ordinary human struggles. Unlike many superheroes, Peter Parker balances saving the world with everyday problems, making him relatable to audiences across generations.
The character has also enjoyed remarkable consistency at the global box office. Even The Amazing Spider-Man 2, widely regarded as one of the franchise’s weaker entries, grossed more than Sh90.6 billion ($700 million) worldwide.
Spider-Man’s popularity has also been sustained through television shows and animated series that introduce younger audiences to the character, while Sony Pictures continues producing Spider-Man films under its long-standing rights agreement.
