In August 2015, a truck abandoned on an Austrian highway concealed one of Europe’s most horrifying migrant tragedies.
On August 27, Austrian authorities inspected a 7.5-ton refrigerated meat truck that had been left on the shoulder of the A4 motorway near Parndorf, close to the Hungarian border.
What officers discovered inside would shock Europe.
Sealed inside the truck’s refrigerated cargo compartment were the bodies of 71 refugees who had died during the journey.
The victims had been packed into the vehicle by members of a human trafficking network and locked inside with little access to air.
Police later established that they had died from suffocation shortly after the truck left Hungary.
Among the dead were 59 men, eight women and four children, including a baby.
The victims had travelled from countries including Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran, having paid traffickers to help them reach Western Europe in search of safety and better lives.
Instead, their journey ended in a sealed truck abandoned by the roadside.
The discovery triggered a major international investigation, with Hungarian authorities working to identify and dismantle the trafficking network behind the deadly operation.
Investigators eventually arrested several people linked to the transport and brought them before the courts.
In 2019, Hungarian courts handed down heavy sentences against four key members of the network.
An Afghan national identified as the group’s leader and three Bulgarian associates involved in driving and managing the transport were sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of human trafficking offences and multiple counts of manslaughter.
Other members of the network received shorter prison terms for their roles.
The 2015 tragedy became one of the starkest reminders of the deadly risks faced by refugees who depend on human traffickers to cross borders in search of safety.
Eight years after the bodies were discovered, the case remains a haunting chapter in Europe’s migrant crisis, where a journey towards a new life ended with 71 people dying together inside a locked truck.
