After missing out on his much-anticipated performance at Africa Forward Le Concert 2026 on May 12 in Kasarani, Congolese rhumba star Fally Ipupa was back in town, giving Nairobi an evening of music, dance and nostalgia.
The much-anticipated concert brought together lovers of Congolese rhumba, soukous and contemporary African sounds for a musical experience that stretched deep into the night.
The event featured Kamo Mphela, Tango Supreme, DJ Ice, DJ Maphorisa and Joe Mfalme, delivering one night of five acts and non-stop energy, from Congolese rhumba to Amapiano.
The concert was also a showcase of Africa’s increasingly interconnected music scene, with South African Amapiano star Kamo Mphela performing alongside renowned producer and DJ Maphorisa.
Kenyan acts also played a significant role in the concert, with DJ Joe Mfalme, DJ Ice, Tango Supreme and Kedong Klan featuring on the lineup.
Ipupa’s appeal in Kenya has grown steadily over the years, with his music enjoying a strong following among fans of classical and modern African music. His ability to fuse traditional Congolese rhumba and soukous with elements of R&B, Afrobeats and contemporary pop has helped him build a pan-African audience.
The Nairobi concert also came after an earlier anticipated appearance by the singer in Kenya did not take place, making his return to the capital particularly significant for fans who had been waiting to see him perform.
The singer had promised fans a memorable show when he arrived in Nairobi on Thursday, declaring his love for Kenya and expressing his excitement about returning to perform for his Kenyan audience.
“I am so excited to be here in Kenya. I love the Kenyan fans and the food, and for my fans, I promise them a bubbly concert,” said Fally during a press conference.
With a career spanning several years, Fally has established himself as one of the continent’s most influential contemporary African musicians, successfully blending traditional Congolese rhumba with modern Afrobeats and other global sounds.
Recently, Fally Ipupa was caught up in a scandal when socialite Collette Ttsaza leaked private messages alleging manipulation and threats by the rhumba star following a proposed charity partnership. While the leaks challenged the musician’s public image, his media team countered with a voice note, prompting public debate over the timeline and motives.
The concert was designed as a musical marathon, beginning in the afternoon and running into the early hours of Sunday morning. Organisers billed the event as a celebration of African music, bringing together different generations and sounds on one stage.
