Jamaican dancehall and reggae star Demarco has praised Kenyan fans for their warmth, saying their love and energy are the reason he keeps returning to the country.
In an interview he said: “I love the people, the energy and you feel at home and you can just walk anywhere. It’s the love man, I love this place.”
Demarco has also revealed that Kenya feels close to Jamaica. “We love Kenya. It is a good country with good people and beautiful women,” he told Pulse. He added: “Kenya is more or less like Jamaica.
From the way people dress to the way they party, we all seem to have the same culture and similar traditions.”
His connection with African audiences grew strongly after his hit “I Love My Life.” Demarco explained that many listeners first believed he was Nigerian because the song became so popular across Africa.
“That’s the first place I got my big recognition from,” he said, adding that Africans began following his music from that time.
Demarco, whose real name is Collin Demar Edwards, was born in Portmore, Jamaica. He began performing at the famous Cactus nightclub at age 15 and worked as a selector for the Future Disco sound system.
He later moved to the United States, where he learned music production and began making beats.
After returning to Jamaica, he built his career around Kingston’s music scene and became known as a singer, songwriter, producer, and video director.
His breakthrough songs include “Duppy Know Ah Who Fi Frighten,” “Fallen Soldiers,” “True Friend,” and “I Love My Life.”
The latter helped make him a familiar name in Nigeria and other African countries, leading to performances in Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Guinea.
According to the Dancehall star, Kenya is more than a tour stop. As he put it, the fans’ love and energy make him feel at home.
