Kamba Benga musician Alex Kasau, popularly known as Katombi, has defended his latest song, “Wikend”, following criticism of its music video, saying he makes music for adults and is not a role model for children.

The video, released on October 9, 2026, sparked debate over its provocative dancing and performances, with critics questioning whether the content was appropriate for younger audiences.

Katombi  told critics, “I am not your role model,” arguing that parents, rather than musicians, should decide what children watch.

The song’s official audio was released on September 2, 2026, with production by Kisinga Sounds.

The backlash echoes earlier clashes between Katombi and the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), then led by Ezekiel Mutua, over the singer’s stage name and lyrics.

Mutua criticised the content as obscene and warned that artists who failed to promote positive moral values could face legal action.

“If you can’t be creative in a positive way to build moral values and help society grow, then you have no business in the industry,” Mutua said.

He also threatened to jail artists and auction their property over content deemed inappropriate.

Katombi rejected the criticism, urging Mutua to consult a Kamba dictionary to understand the meaning of his stage name.

Born on April 19, 1983, Katombi began his music career around 2000 with the Kisasi Stars band in Mombasa before forming his own group in 2006. He now leads Nguuni Lovers.

His popular songs include “Pewa Pewa”, “Kalivu” and “Umui”. His music blends Kamba and Swahili lyrics with Benga rhythms, often drawing on everyday experiences.

In a past interview, Katombi said his music was about happiness and ordinary life.

“My music is all about happiness. I address the real issues to do with our day-to-day life,” he said, adding that he had “no apology” to make to those who disliked his work.

The latest controversy has revived debate over artistic freedom and musicians’ responsibility to younger audiences. Katombi maintains that his music is intended for adults and that parents should determine what their children consume.
