Veteran radio presenter Fred Obachi Machoka ejected his niece, former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, from the stage during a concert celebrating his 50 years in broadcasting after she appeared to signal political chants.
The incident happened on Saturday, October 10, at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, where Machoka was marking his golden jubilee in the media industry.
In a video circulating online and seen by TNX Africa, Orwoba is seen gesturing “Wantam” from the main platform before Machoka interrupts her and calls on security officers to escort her off the stage.
“Please, security, toa huyu msichana hapa. You cannot screw up my job. Next time you are with your uncle, utajua hapa huna neno, utatii,” Machoka said.
Security officers subsequently led Orwoba away as spectators watched the unexpected confrontation unfold.
The incident sparked mixed reactions, with some viewers interpreting it as a family disagreement that had spilled into the public event.
Despite the interruption, the celebrations continued, drawing thousands of fans, politicians and other public figures who had gathered to honour Machoka’s five decades in broadcasting.
The event featured live musical performances by regional and international artistes, including Congolese rhumba star Koffi Olomide.
Machoka is among Kenya’s longest-serving media personalities and is widely known for hosting Roga Roga, a radio and television show dedicated to rhumba music.
Orwoba previously served as a nominated senator representing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). She is Machoka’s biological niece through his sister.
Neither Machoka nor Orwoba had issued an official statement regarding the incident by the time of publication.
