How well do you really know what’s in your glass?

When you order a bottle, are you picking it because you genuinely love the taste, or are you letting the price tag, a slick label or a familiar name make the call?

Do you know why a crisp white pairs brilliantly with your tilapia, or why serving temperature can make or break your Friday night pour?

If you’ve found yourself pondering these questions lately, you’re far from alone. Across Kenya, the way we drink wine is undergoing a quiet, delicious revolution.

Gone are the days when ordering wine simply meant choosing between red and white. Today, wine in Kenya is less about the bottle sitting on the table and much more about the story, craftsmanship and experience behind every glass.

According to market research firm Euromonitor International, Kenya’s wine market expanded by three per cent in 2025, topping 29.3 million litres. But the real story isn’t just about how much we’re drinking. It’s about how we’re drinking.

Today’s consumer is curious, intentional and eager to learn.

Where were these grapes grown? Is it a single varietal? What are those subtle tasting notes? And will it actually complement dinner?

That shifting culture took centre stage in Nairobi during Dion Day, an executive forum hosted by Dion Wines & Spirits.

The event brought together hotel general managers, lead sommeliers, top chefs and hospitality leaders to dissect the evolving palate of the East African wine drinker.

“The modern wine consumer is becoming increasingly educated, inquisitive, and intentional about what goes into their glass,” noted Dan Davies, founder and CEO of Dion Wines & Spirits.

Industry experts at the event pointed to a surge in demand for cool-climate, lighter-bodied wines, alongside organic, biodynamic and low-intervention labels.

Consumers aren’t just looking for an alcoholic beverage. They want an authentic taste of place and a genuine connection to the producer.

Naturally, the local dining scene is taking notes. Restaurants across Nairobi and beyond are no longer treating wine lists as an afterthought.

Instead, wine pairings are being carefully woven into menus to elevate the entire dining experience.

“The conversation is no longer simply about what wine is available but why it has been selected, how it is presented, and whether the people serving it can tell its story. That is where education and curation become so important to the hospitality experience,” Davies said.

Whether you consider yourself a budding sommelier or simply someone who loves a crisp, refreshing glass to kick off the weekend, one thing is undeniably clear: Kenya’s relationship with wine has changed.

The new era of wine culture is all about curiosity, curation and confidence, knowing not just what’s in your glass, but exactly why it belongs there.

Cheers to that!
