Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate who survived a botched lethal injection, is reportedly speaking in full sentences and showing signs of physical recovery nearly a month after the failed execution attempt.

The 50-year-old has made notable progress since the September 30 procedure, with reports indicating improvements in her speech and mobility. However, the long-term effects on her physical and cognitive health remain uncertain.

According to reports, Pike can now communicate in complete sentences, marking a significant development after she was left critically ill following the attempted execution.

Pike was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. However, after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital, she continued breathing and was eventually taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

Her condition initially deteriorated so severely that she lost consciousness and was placed on a ventilator.

Her lawyers later reported that she had regained consciousness and could speak, although her prognosis remained uncertain.

The failed procedure also left Pike with serious injuries to her arms. Her legal team reported that her arms were swollen, burned and blistered, while she developed complications including pneumonia, a blood clot and difficulty swallowing.

Despite the severity of her condition, Pike gradually began showing signs of improvement.

Her attorneys reported that she had started taking a few steps with assistance, while movement and strength were returning to her arms.

She was discharged from hospital on October 10 and returned to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Nashville, where she had been held for more than three decades. She continues to receive medical care as her recovery progresses.

The incident has raised questions about Tennessee’s lethal injection procedures. Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent review following the failed execution, while the state’s prison chief announced his resignation.

Pike was 18 when she was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at a Job Corps programme in Knoxville.

Her attorneys have called for her death sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment without parole, citing the circumstances surrounding the failed execution.

Despite the improvement in her speech, her legal team has cautioned that the lasting consequences of the ordeal remain uncertain.
