Ugandan businesswoman and reality TV star Zari Hassan has sparked debate on social media after a video showed her kneeling before her husband, Shakib Cham, before the two shared kisses and embraced.
In the short clip seen by TNX Africa, the couple appeared relaxed and affectionate. At one point, Shakib fed Zari a strawberry before she sat on his lap. However, it was Zari’s decision to kneel before him that drew the most attention from viewers.
In parts of Uganda, kneeling before a husband or an elder is traditionally regarded as a sign of respect. The gesture may be used when greeting someone or serving food, although customs vary across communities and households.
The video drew mixed reactions online, with some Kenyan users questioning the gesture while others defended it as a cultural expression of respect.
The public display of affection comes months after the couple experienced a brief separation that played out on social media.
In June 2026, Zari announced that they were parting ways after five years together. Shakib later said he was caught off guard by the announcement, claiming he learnt about their split through social media at the same time as the public.
The pair reconciled weeks later, in July 2026, during a romantic getaway in Uganda. They subsequently played down the breakup announcement, with Shakib continuing to share affectionate tributes to Zari, including birthday messages referring to her as his “Queen”.
The couple held a private Islamic wedding ceremony in 2023 and have continued to attract public attention through their relationship and social media updates.
Zari is known for her business ventures and reality television appearances, while Shakib frequently features in her online posts, giving followers glimpses into their marriage.
