The US will release a limited number of passports featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump, the White House has confirmed.
First reported by Fox News, the special passports will be issued as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence in July.
An administration official said that the redesigned passports will be available to “any American citizen” applying when the rollout begins, and will remain on offer while supplies last. They will, however, only be issued through the Washington Passport Agency.
A rendering released by the US State Department shows Trump’s image surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence and the American flag, with his signature in gold.
“President Trump’s new patriotic passport design provides yet another great way Americans can join in the spectacular celebrations for America’s 250th birthday,” a White House spokesperson told the BBC.
According to Tommy Piggott, a State Department spokesperson, the commemorative passports are part of wider plans to mark the milestone anniversary.
“As the United States marks its 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed US passports to commemorate this historic occasion,” he said.
Designs show Trump’s portrait on an internal passport page opposite an illustration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
The US Mint has also announced plans for a commemorative gold coin bearing Trump’s image. The Treasury Department has said US currency will carry his signature, marking the first time a sitting president’s signature has appeared on federal money.
Since returning to office early last year, Trump’s administration has also attached his name to several high-profile federal initiatives and projects, including Washington buildings, a planned class of Navy warships, a visa programme for wealthy foreigners, a government prescription drug website, and federal savings accounts for children.
